Statement of Need
The field of pain management is challenging and should be multidimensional in both assessment and treatment with a predilection for various approaches utilizing pharmacotherapy. Pharmacotherapy, however, is fraught with its own challenges and impediments. Breakthrough pain, for example, is a frequent problem that occurs in the presence of otherwise stable, persistent pain and may be a predictor of poor response to treatment with routine pharmacotherapy. In addition, elderly patients are at a significantly higher risk of adverse drug reactions and overdosing to pharmacologic intervention because of pharmacokinetic and metabolic changes associated with age. In accordance with the challenging needs and obstacles pervasive in the professions associated with pain management, it is critical to update these professionals on the latest research regarding the challenging categories of pain and their treatment. This program will empower pharmacists and physicians to better identify effective treatments which are likely to cause the fewest side effects by exploring the underlying pathophysiology of various types of pain and the effects of various pharmacological agents.
